Visit Sublette

Sublette is a typical Midwestern farming village; its skyline is defined by two church spires and the silos of the towering grain elevator. Yet, it is unique in many ways. Within ten miles of the village there re over 8,000 campsites located in five separate camping resorts, including Woodhaven Lakes which is the world's largest privately owned camping resort. Shady Oaks Country Club, a sporty eighteen hole golf course is just northwest of town on Route 52. You'll enjoy our one block business district which has been restored to a 1920's vintage with wrought iron railings and antique street lights.

On the third Sunday of March each year the village hosts the Sublette Farm Toy and Antique Tractor Show. The show attracts over 7,000 visitors from throughout the Midwest . The show is located throughout the village in seven buildings with over 300 tables of toys and over 200 full size antique tractors. On the third Saturday of May and the third Saturday of September a car show is held in the village. The fall show features Kaiser-Frazer and Willys-Overland automobiles.

Sublette is also the location of the only reproduction set of Burma Shave signs in the State of Illinois . They were installed by Reminisce Magazine in 1995 after Sublette was the selected site through a contest held by the magazine.

The village is the birthplace of author William E. Barton, one of the most authoritative and prolific writers on the subject of Abraham Lincoln. The village history includes a period shortly after the civil war when the Sublette Armory housed the largest guard unit in the State of Illinois .

While visiting Sublette you can view the old Angear Hospital , home of "Twilight Sleep," a painless method of childbirth perfected here by Dr. B. H. S. Angear, a local physician who practiced in Sublette from 1900 to 1940.

Within the community is Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the Sublette Union Church, the latter a nondenominational edifice resulting from the merger of the Baptist, Methodist and Congregational Churches. The stained glass windows in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church are among the most beautiful in Northern Illinois . They were imported from Innsbruck in the early 1900's.
